WHIV 2039.1- Roster Decisions
November 11, 2038

The Hustlers, coming off a disappointing Landis Memorial Series loss, have already started to look forward to the 2039 season in making some roster decisions.

The easiest decision of all was declining the team option on oft-injured righty Gerardo Fajardo. This move will save the Hustlers $9M towards their 2039 cap which was key to a couple arby/extension decisions which will be discussed in a later article.

It was another easy call to pick up the team option for catcher Antonio Robles. He's not the biggest name amongst his catching peers in the BBA but certainly one of the best bargains at $1.5M.

Las Vegas expected that Gervasio Ridder was not going to opt out of a guaranteed $16M per season in 2039 and 2040, and he quickly made that official by declining his opt-out. The Hustlers will now need to find a way to get at least some of their investment back.

The Hustlers also designated RHP Powell Canning for assignment. He only made six major league appearances from 2035-2037 and was not called up this September, so the writing was on the wall.

It appears that the Hustlers will also decline arbitration on three players, as 2B Antonio Cruz, RHP Jeff Whitney and C Robinson Lopez will all become free agents, saving the Hustlers another $4.1 million on their 2039 cap projections.

Three players have been added to the 40-man roster in preparation for the Rule 5 Draft. RHP Senzo Kobayashi (unranked), CF Francisco Mendez (#22 Prospect) and RHP Jose Garcia (#9 Prospect) will all be protected as members of the 40-man.

The Hustlers are currently negotiating extensions with the remaining arby-eligible players, as RF Declan Crauen, SP Chin Kim, RP Wayne Muirhead, 2B Quant Kouros, SP Hao Kun, RP Tony Medine, SS Miguel Rodriguez and 1B/DH Eliseu Satino are all expected to sign before reaching the arbitration hearings.

It appeared that the Hustlers were considering letting RP Augute Balun explore free agency, but after having productive talks with the player it now seems likely that they will come to an agreement on a four year contract to keep the star righty in Las Vegas. However, several players will be allowed to reach the market, including: C Andres Martinez, LHP Jose Perez, RHP Kyle Elston, and the aforementioned Fajardo.
