WHIV 2038.17- Fifth Starter Spot Remains An Issue

Fifth Starter Spot Remains An Issue
July 1, 2038

When Gerardo Fajardo was lost for four months after just two starts, the Hustlers were left without their most consistent starter from last season. Las Vegas turned first to Alvin Chartrand who was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA and 7 homers allowed in 4 starts. Then, the Hustlers gave the ball to Bert Hugill who started strong with a 4-0 record in five May starts, but he was downright brutal in June (5 GS, 1-2, 10.41 ERA, 8 homers allowed). With Chartrand now pitching well in a relief role, the Hustlers are again looking for a solution.

With heavy reservations, the team is now expected to call Poto Tornatore up from Milwaukee (AAA) to take this volatile rotation slot. Tornatore has all the tools to succeed in the big leagues with one big exception- a complete lack of control. "To be honest we haven't had a guy like this since Jon Reed and we don't have a lot of experience with these low control types," explained Matt Rectenwald, the Las Vegas GM. "It's hard to ignore his numbers with Milwaukee, though." In 15 starts, he's 8-5 with a 3.18 ERA. He's been a workhorse too, pitching 121 2/3 innings with 7 complete games and 3 shutouts in an age when starters don't often go deep into games anymore. As to be expected, he's issued 60 free passes, but only 82 hits allowed while striking out 92 and allowing just 7 homers with a 1.17 WHIP. "What have we got to lose," asked Rectenwald. "He's on our 40-man roster and this is his last option year so we might as well find out once and for all if he can contribute or not."

I think guys with 2 out of three above average ratings can be successful but also very hit and miss. As a 5th starter though, that's expected. I'd expect 2-3 good starts mixed in with the occassional 2-3 blowup ones.
