Two Experiments Come To An End
April 29, 2038

When the Las Vegas Hustlers broke Spring Training they opened up with a few experiments on their roster. Two of them are coming to an end before the month of April is over.

The Antonio Cortez era in center field is over after just a few weeks. Observers expected the rope to be short here and it was. "He wasn't hitting nor was he fielding the position well enough to keep holding this spot," announced GM Matt Rectenwald. "We wanted it to work out but sometimes things don't go the way you plan and you have to pivot." Cortez is out of options and thus will be exposed to waivers where any team can claim him. Manager Edward Allen goes on to explain this move had multiple layers. "So we figured that if Cortez wasn't going to cut it we might as well let Carlos Camacho play every day," Allen said. "We all know his reputation and he was already starting to get pissed off, so we'll give him a chance to back up his big talk."

Vegas also took a flier on former top prospect Kyle Elston last year via waivers, and gave him a bullpen spot to start the year. A stinker of an effort against Boise in which he gave up five runs in two thirds of an inning was all the Hustlers brass could stomach. "Kyle needs to be a starter, and I'm sure someone will pick him up to do just that," explained Rectenwald. "Also we let Alphonse Salvarani go earlier in the year when we had a roster crunch, and so we needed another left-handed reliever so this is the path we chose at this time." Rectenwald mentioned the need for a lefty reliever, and shortly after waiving Elston and designating him for assignment the Hustlers re-called LHP Wayne Jackson from Milwaukee (AAA). "We'll use Wayne in multiple situations, he's not just a LOOGY," said manager Allen.
