2037 Las Vegas Hustlers Player Grades: The Starting Pitchers

The 2037 Las Vegas Hustlers can only be categorized as a microcosm of their past few years- a solid all around team that lacked in starting pitching consistency. Unlike the great Hustlers teams of old, these Hustlers don't have a Christopher Stoller, a Davey Acheson, a Gary Estes or a Manny Bautista. There was hope that Hao Kun would turn into that guy and that hope still exists, but by the end of the season Gerardo Fajardo had clearly become the top dog in the starting pitching pecking order. While the Hustlers felt good with both Fajardo and Kun, it was the other starters that ultimately became the club's undoing.

Gerardo Fajardo : Fajardo got through a season with limited missed time, unlike his first year with the Hustlers when he was hurt in his first game and missed the whole 2036 season. He was able to start 24 games, going 8-5 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. That was good for 2 WAR which the Hustlers were very happy about. His pitching down the stretch in big games was particularly impressive. Grade: B

Hao Kun : Kun was again the Hustlers top starter overall. He was a workhorse, starting 34 games and pitching 246 innings (something that Las Vegas will want to keep an eye on long term). His 17-11 record led the club, as did his 178 strikeouts and 3.5 WAR. While his 1.25 WHIP was manageable, his 4.50 ERA left something to be desired. As with most of these pitchers, the longball (38 homers allowed) was his achilles heel. Grade: B-

Hyun-sik Chang : Fresh off a big contract extension, Chang had an uneven season. The Hustlers expected him to be the third of a solid "Big Three" but he failed to deliver. The good news: he made 32 starts and pitched 221 innings. The bad- he was 13-14 with a 5.05 ERA, 39 homers allowed, and a 1.39 WHIP. He needs to be better. Grade: C-

Chin Kim : At times Kim looked great, then he looked like hot garbage the next time out. When on he's a strikeout pitcher with good control. 35 homers allowed in 159 innings is truly shocking. At the end of the day he started 23 games, going 9-8 with a 5.66 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 1 WAR. Can he limit the homers? If not, he might not be the best fit for this particular ballpark. Grade: D

Jubal Troop : Vegas executives and fans alike we truly pumped by the acqusition of Troop. What followed was truly perplexing. 15 starts, 3-5 record, 6.89 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 18 HR in 95.1 innings and a shocking 47 walks issued. Now the Hustlers need to decide if Troop is truly worth giving $11 million to in arbitration. Grade: F

Alvin Chartrand : The rookie defied the odds to make the Hustlers Opening Day rotation, impressed early, then faded fast and ultimately spent most of the second half in the minor leagues. The jury is still out if he can be a starting pitcher, but he's still very highly regarded around the leagues given the fact that he comes up in nearly every trade discussion the Hustlers have with rival clubs. Grade: D

Bert Hugill : Vegas had every intention of Hugill starting for them after acquiring him a month before the deadline from Vancouver. He started four games with poor results and then the Hustlers got Troop, and Hugill's role changed. He was more effective in relief. Signed to an affordable one year extension at $1.2 million, Hugill will likely be in a swingman role next year. Grade: C-

John Hughes : Hughes was called up for a spot start early in the year and his major league debut was a solid six inning outing in which he earned his first big league win at home against San Antonio. Unfortunately, the price was high as he tore his URL in that very game, and will be out until at least May of 2037. How he bounces back will determine his future fate. For his part Hughes has been quoted as saying "Don't you forget about me...no, no, no, no." Grade: Incomplete
