WHIV 2052.4- Offseason Decisions To Make

Post by recte44 » Tue Nov 08, 2022 10:42 am

Lots of decisions to make this offseason in Las Vegas. Let's take a look:

Upcoming Free Agents:
RF Manoell Whanon- Trade Deadline acquisition, -0.1 WAR with slash line of .254/.329/.338/.667 in regular season. Did hit .348 in the postseason. There's nearly zero chance of him returning.
RP Mitchell Pursell- Overall had a solid season (55 G, 5-5, 21 SV, 3.07 ERA, 60 K in 55.2 IP, 1.11 WHIP, 1.5 WAR). At the right price, he should be a priority.
2B Stephen Geloran, Jr.- Defensive whiz made a career high 22 errors, though did have to serve as the third baseman for 51 starts. Despite the errors, in his 71 starts at second base he put forward the best ZR (+4.5) of his career. Add in his offensive output (.244/.312/443/.755 with 20 doubles, 7 triples, 20 homers, 62 RBI, 17 steals) and he finished with a career high 2.9 WAR. It's likely he gets overpaid in free agency, but if not a late spring return to the Hustlers as happened this season is in play.
RP Quintiliano Rodeia- An uneven regular season preceded a postseason with great starts and not so great starts. Vegas seems likely to move on from him.
RP Fernando Guerrero- It didn't work. He wasn't good. Buh-bye.

Team Option:
SS Damek Korbel ($12.6M)- Korbel showed how much he was worth after being acquired from Chicago and the defense instantly improved. He even hit a little, and a lot in the playoffs, before being injured in Game 2 against New Orleans. Better than 50/50 odds that he's back next year.

Player Option:
LHP Ashton Brooks ($6.5M, Hustlers portion is $3.2M)- This should be an interesting decision. The Hustlers probably want him to opt out, and given that Brooks still thinks he should be a starting pitcher despite the overwhelming evidence that he flourished in relief (yet again) he will probably opt out.
C Spencer Hillson ($1.1M)- Hillson got the first chance of his career to be a starting catcher, and responded with a career year (.277/.322/.415/.737, 28 doubles, 11 HR, 61 RBI, 2.6 WAR). If he doesn't opt out he should fire his agent.

Arbitration:
LF Scotty Beemeup (Projected $2.1M)- Yes, please. Duh.
1B Bryan Gill (Projected $1.7M)- Tough one. Nothing in his career prior to the last two years in Vegas suggested he should even be a BBA player. But the man has been really good, and he does make a perfect platoon partner with Ernesto Souza (whom the Hustlers already signed to an extension).
SP John Rasmussen III (Projected $840K)- Absolutely.
3B Russ Sandhoff (Projected $900K)- I mean, yes, I guess. He's a fine supplemental player, and if the team loses Geloran, Jr. they will probably keep Sandhoff around just for depth.
