Vaive Slumps Sophomore Season
Calgary's Justin Vaive had a terrible sophomore season after a standout rookie year. Last season Vaive led the JL in stolen bases and earned rookie of the year votes. This season his was benched twice for extended periods and sent to the minors for 17 games.
Vaive was supposed to be Calgary's long term solution in CF. A player that could steal more bases than anyone in the league and play decent enough defense to field the position. The team figured even as a .250-.270 hitter he would be great because the steals would extend his offensive reach. So what happened to the fastest player in the league.
First let's compare some 2062 numbers to 2063 numbers
AVG .261 - .231
OBA .345 - .292
OPS .719 - .628
Runs 112-72
SB 84-64
CS 8-12
ZR 4.3- -4.6
Sending Vaive down to AAA didn't help as he hit .139. He was replaced in the lineup with Felix Torres, who has a better glove, but he hit .197 in 127 at bats for Calgary this year. As Calgary looks toward next year, Vaive must improve or the team has a serious long term problem in CF as there is no one else in the organization to step in.
