Sardzetakis Takes BL Jack Sellers Pitcher Award
Belen Sardzetakis was the most outstanding pitcher in the Baxter League this year and today was acclaimed the Jack Sellers Pitcher Award winner for his efforts.
Sardzetakis had a marvelous season, going 9-6 with an impressive 2.09 ERA in 28 starts. He struck out 130 in 159 innings and limited opposing batters to a .230 batting average.
He received 17 first place votes out of a possible 32. Lawrence Forest of the Toledo Liberty finished second in voting with 12 first place votes, while Mike Davis of the Silver Springs Tarpons finished third with 3 first place votes.
Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Belen Sardzetakis - Quebec Capitals - 17 - 176
Lawrence Forest - Toledo Liberty - 12 - 153
Mike Davis - Silver Springs Tarpons - 3 - 44
Bogdan Irimia - Quebec Capitals - 0 - 42
Sardzetakis will need to significantly improve his control to make it up to the BBA. He has 4 quality pitches, but his wildness will not work in Calgary.
3B Kurt Oakes of the Quebec Capitals honored: Wins the 2061 CPL (A) BL Platinum Stick Award at SS.
While he won the award in A ball, he finished the year up with the big league team. In 11 games for Calgary he hit .333 and held his own in the field. At Quebec he posted a +18.2 ZR at SS and is Calgary's best hope for a long term solution at the position. Oakes is expected to hone his craft for AAA Saint Paul in 2062.
CF Felix Torres of the Saint Paul Riverhawks honored: Wins the 2061 RHML (AAA) GL Clayton Chancey Glove Award at CF.
A +21.3 ZR in center field is every team's dream. That is what Torres did in AAA this year along with hitting .254 and swiping 25 bases. Torres spent time in Calgary in 2059 and 2060 and hit .314 in his second stint. The team preferred he spend the 2061 season working on his all around game at AAA, but he will be back in Calgary next season competing for the starting job in CF.
