4-Key Retirements Loom in Calgary
While nothing is official yet, the Pioneers are preparing for several key player and coaching retirements. First among them is future Hall of Famer Larry Stinson.
Stinson had the worst season of his career in 2061. The 40 year old only hit 22 HR and 70 RBIs. To put this in perspective, only twice in his 20 year career has he failed to drive in 100 runs. The other miss was the year he had 97 RBIs. He has also hit 40 or more HR 16 times and has never hit less than 30 before. When the team talked to him about a 1 year extension it is reported that he responded by saying his playing days are over.
Carlomaria Donadoni also turned 40 years old. While his decline has not been as pronounced as Stinson's he too has fallen prey to the V25 virus. He only managed 18 homers and 87 RBIs in 2061. However, given that he still has 2 years remaining on his contract at $8 million each, it is expected that he will come back for another season. Frankly a retirement would help the team with it's cap dilemna, but the fans would certainly welcome him back for another year.
Several members of the team's coaching staff are getting up in years. Hitting Coach Hector Cano (69), Bench Coach Jorge Jimenez (65), Team Trainer Doug Sweatman (64) are all nearing the end of their careers. It would not be a surprise to see one of more of them hang it up.
