Calgary's Season of Doom Finally Ends
The indescribably painful 2061 season has finally come to close with the Calgary Pioneers finishing with a record of 74-88. They trailed the Frontier Division leading Las Vegas Hustlers by 27 games. Last year the Pioneers won the division with a 100-62 record.
The team did so well in 2060 that GM Kevin Dickson was named the Johnson League GM of the Year. What award should he receive this year after dropping 26 wins in a single year? How about the Kevin Stefanski Award. If you don't understand this reference just look it up.
The team went from a +150 run differential to a -75. In 2060 the Pioneers had one of the best pitching staffs in the JL, in 2061 they had the worst. Oddly it was mostly the same players. Hitting the ball wasn't a problem as the team led the JL in batting average, hits and extra base hits. However it was not enough to overcome the poor pitching.
The reduction in the salary cap put the team in a position where they couldn't really add anyone and couldn't even negotiate extensions with their arbitration eligible players. Plus the V25 virus stuck several key players including superstar Larry Stinson.
