Pioneers Win Division

For the first time in nearly two decades, the Calgary Pioneers have won the Johnson League Frontier Division title. That was in 2039, which was so long ago that the Frontier was in the Frick League! Calgary finished 85-77 that season and lost to Jacksonville in the Brewster finale.

This year’s team posted a 96-66 record while dominating the JL in nearly every offensive category. The team led the JL in every hitting category except for OBA where they finished 2nd. It wasn’t just the bats that got it done, the team had the 4th best starting pitching and relief pitching ERA and finished 2nd in zone rating.

“Everything just came together this year,” manager Tony Franco said. “We have some great young players that are really playing great. This team is fun to manage.”

Only 1 starting player hit less than .265 and 6 players hit over 30 home runs. Here were the top bats for the team

Resurrection Santos III - .361 AVG, .594 SLG, .978 OPS, 8.9 WAR, 38 HR, 98 RBI
Carlomaria Donadoni - .286 AVG, .537 SLG, .878 OPS, 37 HR, 111 RBI
Jeff Sawyers - .280 AVG, .584 SLG, .946 OPS, 4.2 WAR, 39 HR, 100 RBI (Rookie)
Michael Little - .265 AVG, .829 OPS, 3.3 WAR, 33 HR, 100 RBI (2nd year)
Sam Butler - .295 AVG, .559 SLG, .913 OPS, 4.8 WAR, 34 HR, 82 RBI (2n year)
Ollie Long - .340 AVG, .386 OBA, .832 OPS, 5.3 WAR, (3rd year and 3rd over 200 hits)

Santos’ 243 hits is the most by any Calgary player in history and 16th best in BBA history
Santos’ batting average, runs scored and WAR were the 3rd best in team history.

On the pitching side the highlights were the following hurlers.

Mitch Bond - 15-10, 4 CG, (2nd season)
Dimitr Zhivluk - 15-9
Daniel Thornton - 11-6. 3.12 ERA, 3.1 WAR, only 11 HR in 31 GS, (3rd season)
Edward Harrison - 4-4, 30 Saves, 1.59 ERA, .91 WHIP, 1.6 WAR, 30 saves in 31 opportunities (Rookie)
