2056-6 Calgary's 200 Hit Club

Calgary’s 200 Hit Club

The Pioneers did something that has never happened before in the team’s history going all the way back to 1973. Three of the team’s players topped 200 hits. There have been many seasons that the team didn’t have anybody top 200 hits and their have been a few where two players have done it, but never three in a year.

#1 Ollie Long - 206 hits

That probably wasn’t the player you expected to be the top hitster on the team, but he was. Long had a great rookie season hitting .320 in 643 at bats. He played in 158 games, starting 154, quite a feat for a rookie. He was also one of three Pioneers to score 100 runs, by hitting the century mark exactly. I am not sure if that feat has been done in team history before either.

#2 Larry Stinson - 202 hits

You have already read a bit about Stinson’s incredible season, 55 HR, 145 RBI’s, etc. Well he topped the 200 mark too and was also one of the three scoring demons with 132 runs scored. This is the 3rd time in his career that Stinson has had over 200 hits in a season.

#3 Carlomaria Donadoni - 200 hits

Donadino just made it to 200 this year a feat that he has only accomplished once before. He was also the third guy with over 100 runs scored with 124. There may be one or two more things written about him before this season wraps up, but isn’t it remarkable that this guy that has over 2500 hits and 565 home runs has only been elected to 2 All Star games?

So 3 players with over 200 hits and all 3 of them also scored over 100 runs. I wonder how many other teams have ever had this happen in their history. I have to think Madison might be a contender for this one given some of the great hitting teams’ Chris had.

**** Ok here is the asterisk. Calgary played 163 games. In that game Stinson got 3 hits and Long scored 1 run. So without that extra game I wouldn’t be writing this article.

Even with that extra game this is still quite the achievement.
