Long Calgary’s Top Rookie

It has been a long time since Calgary had a crop of rookies as good as this year’s, not only in talent, but in their contribution to the team. Three of the team’s rookies have garnered votes for the Gillstrom Award with third baseman Ollie Long the current leader. The last time a Calgary player won the award was Juan Karyabwite in 2032. Calgary was still in the Frick then.

Long, the team’s 1st round pick in 2052 (24th overall) was given the starting 3B job coming out of Spring Training, causing Carlomaria Donadoni to move to DH after winning the Puckett Award at 3B for the first time in his career. The team made room for Long by letting Robert Chenowith become a free agent after 2 stellar years as Calgary’s DH.

Long led Calgary with 206 hits 4th best in the JL and 2nd among rookies. Long led all rookie hitters with his .320 AVG, .367 OBA and 3.5 WAR. He was also tops with 100 runs scored and 2nd with 69 RBIs. In 2055 Long was awarded the Steve Garvey, Jr. Batting Award as the top hitter in his league along with the Platinum Stick for 3B. His is on the verge of topping that depending how the remainder of the votes for the Gillstrom go.

“I have to say that Ollie was as good as advertised,” manager Tony Franco said. “He did everything we asked of him this season. I wish he had a little more speed, because then he would be our leadoff guy for sure.”
