Just One More Win
The Calgary Pioneers came within 1 win of breaking their 5 year playoff drought, losing to Boise in a tiebreaker 7-4. Boise scored 5 runs in the 1st inning off starter Ghi-Cheng Yu and the Pioneers never recovered. The team finished the season at 89-74. Boise.
“Well that isn’t how we wanted it to turn out,” Calgary manager Tony Franco said. “What can I say, we were I think 8 games out of the wildcard with about a month to go and we almost pulled it off.”
Franco, in his rookie season as the team’s skipper led the team to their best record since 2051, when the team went 90-72 and reached the playoffs. Franco replaced Nicholas Brody during the offseason, when Brody became only the second Calgary manager to be fired since GM Kevin Dickson took over the team in 2004.
Much will be written about this turn around season, but the front office also has to be happy that attendance returned to more than 3.5 million fans and the team made a $16 million profit the most since 2047 and only the second profitable season in the last six. With talk of a new ballpark in the future the team needs to watch it’s bank account along with it’s roster.
