Gonzales a Bust in Calgary?
When Ramon Gonzales signed with Calgary last off season the team had high hopes that he would give their rotation a needed boost. Instead Gonzales went 10-13 with an abysmal 5.43 ERA and led the league with 42 home runs allowed. Given that the team gave him a 6 year, $55 million contract, this is not what they paid for.
“I really can’t explain what happened,” pitching coach Fox Mulder said. “This is a guy that only once in his career gave up more than 20 dingers and this season its flying out of here like a whiffle ball. He pitched okay in April and July, but man the rest of the season…..”
The team is hoping that those two good months prove that Gonzales still has the goods and will bounce back next year. In addition to the home runs, he gave up 240 hits in 202.1 IP and his ERA was a full run more than his career average. While used primarily as a reliever throughout his career, Gonzales pitched well in 25 starts during 2054.
