Martinez Out, Drama in Calgary
The Pioneers have fired Assistant General Manager Alfonso Martinez. He had been with the club 16 years and despite rumors of disagreements among the coaching staff, the move came as a surprise. Everyone on the coaching staff has been hired since he began in Calgary, only GM Kevin Dickson, had more seniority.
“When you have the kind of years we’ve been having, something has to change,” Dickson said. “Alfonso has done a great job here, but there was just too much drama in the clubhouse this season.”
The team improved their record by 14 wins since last season, but the August Collapse caused the season to end with thud. When this happens, there is always a lot of finger pointing, both on the field and off.
Rumors have swirled for the past couple of months about a rift among the coaches, with bench coach Esteban Ortiz and fellow Dominican, base coach Albert Orozco on one side and manager Nicholas Brody and pitching coach Fox Muldder on the other. Orozco reportedly questioned if Ortiz would have been the better choice to manage the team, instead of Brody after the retirement of Terry Cochran last season.
Mulder defended Brody and the two allegedly questioned why he still had a job after the dismal pitching this year. Brody threatened to fire Orozco and that is when Martinez stepped in and sided with Ortiz and Orozco. With the coaching staff split between the Dominicans and the Americans, it is no wonder the team was such a mess.
When asked why he chose to fire Martinez, Dickson replied “Well I sure as hell wasn’t going to fire myself.” He didn’t comment when asked about whether there would be further coaching changes.
