Pioneers Die in August
In 2053, the Calgary Pioneers fell apart in June when the team went 5-22. Well this year they waited until August going 6-22 for the month. On July 26th, the Pioneers were 56-45, 11 games over .500, and in the 3rd wild card spot. Then the collapse happened.
It started on July 26th when the Oysters came to Calgary and swept a 3 game series. Then the team closed out the month with 2 more losses to Edmonton. In August the wheels fell off the bus, the axles too, heck the whole bus fell apart. Calgary went 6-22 in August, which included an 11 game losing streak September wasn’t much better with a a dismal 11-17.
Calgary finished the season at 73-89, 23 games behind division winner Mexico City and 11 games out of the wild card. In the Johnson League, only 2 teams finishes worse. So the team went from 56-45, .554, on July 26th and 17-44, .278, afterwards. This may have been the most disappointing ever witnessed by Calgary fans, who thought the team would bounce back from th 59-103 finish in 2053.
Three straight losing seasons with a combined record of 208-278. The only time the team put together 3 worse seasons in a row was in 2004-2006, which were the first seasons under GM Kevin Dickson. The question is “Now what?”
