Stinson, Backhouse Future Uncertain

The Pioneers will have to wait and see if one or both of their star hitters decides to stick with the team. Both Larry Stinson and Adam Backhouse have contractual options to fly the nest and become free agents. After the horrific 59-103 season, there are real concerns that they will both leave.

Stinson has been an All Star in five out of his six seasons in Calgary. He has been awarded two Puckett Awards as well. In his six years with the Pioneers he has hit .308, with 245 HR, 664 RBIs and a .969 OPS. He has a player option for next year that will pay him $20 million and would be a free agent after that irregardless.

Backhouse, who came over from the GBC in 2050 has 2 years left on his contract, but an opt out after this season. He is scheduled to make $14.5 million next year and given the greed of recent free agent classes the team is expecting him to act on it. In four years in Calgary he has hit .309, with 173 HR and 498 RBIs. He has been named to the All Star team twice and has won one Puckett Award.

“I really hope that both of these guys realize that this year was an aberration,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “If they stay I think we can be a playoff team in 2 years.”
