Calgary’s New Guys Suck Too
Calgary ,missed out on some of it’s main free agent targets this off season, but the team did land 3 players that they were counting on to join the starting lineup and anchor some positions. Well the team struck out and went 0-3. If you want to include Alfredo Rosas as #4 since he left the team before then agreeing to come back, well then since he is going to miss more than half the season Calgary is 0-4.
One player that was targeted and the team did succeed in signing was catcher Bruce McKinley. After being a backup catcher for years, McKinley finally got a chance to start last season and was one of the best catchers in the league, both with his bat and his glove. Even if he only hit .250, Calgary figured his superior defense would help out the pitching staff. Well he is hitting .217 and for much of the season was hitting under .200. Defensively he has a .2 ZR and has only thrown out 28% of runners stealing on him.
Tomas Borges is a player that the team has always coveted, thinking his power bat would be a nice fit and add some much needed pop to the offense. Borges had a career season in 2051, hitting 53 homers and driving in 150 runs. Then he sat out all of 2052. Calgary tried to sign him several times, but never had enough cap space to meet his demands. So when the team was able to reach and agreement and sign him this season, optimism was rampant. Well he has hit 11 homers, but is batting .220 with a .668 OPS and has lost his starting job. His -6.4 ZR isn’t helping matters. So strike 2.
The third strike was in the outfield. After missing on several power hitters, the Pioneers went a different direction and signed Jorge Gutierrez. The past 2 seasons he had hit over .300 with a .800+ OPS. Calgary thought with his on base skills and speed he could be a reliable leadoff guy. Well he is hitting .256 with a.720 OPS. These aren’t horrible numbers, but they aren’t $11 million a year numbers either.
So the moves Calgary made before the season didn’t work out. Several key players from last year are either hurt or performing poorly, thus you have one of the worst Calgary teams in history. As a result everyone is on the block, nobody is off the table, but the team needs young hitters to rebuild, whether through trade or draft or the playoffs might have to wait for the next generation.
