2052-1 Calgary Sucks

Calgary Sucks

It is that simple. The reality is that the Calgary Pioneers are stinking up the entire province of Alberta. Nobody thought that this was realistically a playoff team, but playing above .500 was a sane expectation. Well here we are at the All Star break and the team is 31-55, playing .360 ball, and 25 games out of 1st place. This is a franchise that has never lost 100 games in the modern era and the last time the team lost triple digits was 1978. Nobody associated with the team was even born then.

There are 16 teams in the Johnson League. Calgary is one game better than the worst team in the league. Runs scored 12th place, OPS 12th place, Runs Against 13th, Def Efficiency 13th, Run Differential -100. These are just a few of the team’s highlights.

The Pioneers knew that their offense wasn’t going to be great again this year, but when your SP ERA is 11th and your bullpen is 10th, that isn’t going to cut it. Franklin Badger won 20 games last season and this year he has won 2. His ERA has doubled from 3.05 to 6.36. Closer Joe Walter ended last year with a 1.90 ERA and .96 WHIP, this year he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.69 WHIP. The list goes on….

Offensively the team was counting on another big year from Adam Backhouse who hit .343 with 49 homers last year. He got hurt the first week of the season and missed 37 games. Third baseman Alfredo Rosas, tested free agency and then resigned with the team 2 weeks before Spring Training. He was tearing things up, hitting .321 and boom a torn thigh muscle has ended his season. The team has the 8th highest payroll in the BBA, much of it spent on the offense and they aren’t getting their money’s worth.

While many teams ride the roller coaster, going from playoff team’s to top 10 draft pick teams every 6 or 7 years, Calgary has avoided a total tear down. Now it looks like it is the team’s only option and it coincides with the weakest minor league talent in possibly the entire history of the league. Trying to sell and get value now is going to be like selling farmland in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl.

I liked Badger but I didn’t think he was THAT good.

2052 looks to have been an outlier as of now…
