2052-4 Backhouse Almost Wins Batting Title

Backhouse Almost Wins Batting Title

After leading the league in hitting most of the season, Adam Backhouse finished second to Boise’s Pepe Madrid. Madrid’s .353 AVG beat Backhouse’s .343 by a full 10 points, by outhitting him in September .453 to .310. Yep, Madrid hit .453 in the final month of the season and should be a unanimous winner of some kind of award.

Backhouse had an outstanding season for the Pioneers, leading the league with 233 hits and 679 at bats. He hasn’t missed a game in the last 2 seasons and this was the 2nd year in a row that he led the league in at bats. Backhouse hit 49 homers, scored 112 runs and had 126 RBIs.

“He just keeps getting better every year,” hitting coach Hector Cano said. “Plus with all the home runs he hits, I don’t think many people realize that he has also cut down on his strikeouts each year he had been here and he had increased his walks.”

Backhouse struck out 150 times in 2050, 125 in 2051 and only a 102 this season. Meanwhile his walks have increased from 4, to 11 to an amazing 14 this year. His 233 hits and 417 total bases are second best in Calgary history. Sitting at 497 homers, between the GBC and the BBA, he will join the 500 homer club next year.

Backhouse is under contract for 3 more seasons, but has on opt out after next year. If he plays like he did this year, he is almost certain to exercise it and the Pioneers will have to open up their wallet to keep him.

Backhouse was ahead going into our final series against each other! Madrid just went off in the final 3 games.

Still, Backhouse is a special player. Congrats to him on another great season.

Madrid’s last month was ridiculous, but yep the final series did it.

He is showing for 50 homers and 10 walks this year. Then he will dump us for a winning team and ask for a huge contract

I obtained Adam in a dispersal draft after some UMEBA teams contracted. Those were halcyon days… contraction drafts, super-ridiculous draft pools… now you actually have to work to build a good team 😜

I usually draft really suspect players in the first round Yet in my two stints in international ball I drafted Backhouse and BBA hall of famer Carton Winson. Wish I could have brought them to my forever teams.
