Calgary’s First 20 Game Winner in 73 Years!

FFranklin Badger became only the second 20 game winner in Calgary history and the first in 73 years. Badger went 20-10 this season, one of 3 pitchers to win 20 this season in the BBA. To find another pitcher to reach that mark in Calgary, you have to go all the way back to 1979 when Jamaal Jumboni went 20-12. Ironically both pitchers did it when the Pioneers had losing seasons.

“Frankie had a great start in his rookie year, but lost his groove mid season and we sent him down to AAA,” pitching coach Fox Mulder said. “But to his credit, he worked on his craft and look what he did this season.”

Badger, in his sophomore season, was among the league leaders in several categories. He was 3rd in the JL with a 3.05 ERA and 3rd in WHIP posting a 1.12. He also held opposing hitters to a league best .231. Along with lefty Leon Ludeman, Calgary had two of the best and most consistent starters in the JL.

“I think we are starting next season with a solid top 3 with Frankie, Leon and Diaz,” Mulder said. “Plus I think people are going to be shocked with some of the talent we bring up from the minors. We are going to have a really competitive staff next year.”

Badger won his 20 games in 33 starts. Back in 1979, Jumboni needed 40 starts to win his 20. Jumboni won 20 games or more during 2 other seasons with Nashville. Unfortunately, Jumboni passed away a few years after his retirement when he was run over by the Zamboni machine at a youth hockey game.
