Thanks For the Great Season, Now BYE

The Pioneers knew that they had two big holes to fill coming into this season. They needed a #1 starter and they needed a 2B that could hit, but not kill them in the field. They got both on one year deals and both played great, but won’t likely be back.

Brian King was an absolute steal in free agency as Calgary signed him for a bargain $5 million. Making it even sweeter was that he was a long time standout for Las Vegas and Calgary always loves to lure those guys in. King is looking for $10-12 million in an extension, but Calgary doesn’t have the cap space and is unlikely to sign another older starting pitcher given what has happened to Jefferson Pierce. The team never eve opened extension talks with King.

King gave the Pioneers more than their money’s worth. He went 13-11, 3.94 ERA and a 4.6 WAR. That was the 3rd best WAR for any SP in the JL, which should earn the team a comp pick. His 210 innings were 2nd most in the league and he was top 5 in WHIP and BB/9 IP. He hasn’t shown any sign of decline and should contribute to some team’s rotation next season, just not Calgary’s. Unless they can get him for $5 million again, then maybe.

Rocky Wattson didn’t sign until midway through June, so he really only had half a season in Calgary at the bargain price of $3.2 million. In that time he clocked 23 homers and drove in 51 runs, while posting an .842 OPS. Pretty good for second base. His -13 ZR didn’t help in the field, but Calgary frequently subbed him out in late game situations.

Wattson is looking for a 5 year, $60 million dollar extension. There have been no negotiations. While the fans loved his long ball, the team will wish him the best and see him on his way. There are several interesting prospects lining up to take his spot.
