2051-4 Will Pierce Retire?

Will Pierce Retire?

The future of the Pioneers may rest on the decision that pitcher Jefferson Pierce makes at the end of this season. The team’s leader, in almost everything pitching, seemed to lose his big league ability this season and speculation is high that he is considering retirement. Team management, not so secretly, hopes that he does.

Pierce had his worst season by far in 2051, eventually being banished to the bullpen for the first time in his career. His 8-6, 5.22 ERA season was even worse than the headlines. A pitcher that has averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game over his career only managed 5 per game. His walks ballooned and his WHIP hit 1.54 for the second season in a row. After May his ERA was over 6.00.

Scouts downgraded his overall rating to from a 55 to a 35 and his fastball that had clocked in at over 100 mph for his whole career was barely braking 95. Maybe if he hadn’t been so good for so long, it wouldn’t have been as noticeable, but “Black Lightning” could barely manage a spark. The 6 time All Stars day’s in the BBA look like they are over.

Neither Pierce nor the club would comment when asked. Pierce is owed $10.2 million next year and $8.8 million in 2053. The team can buy him out of 2054 for $2 million. When he signed the contract, everyone assumed the last year would be a buy out and that the team might have to eat part of 2053, but really he stopped earning his money last year.

Now what does the team do? If he retires at the end of the season, everyone wins. The team clears the cap space and Pierce retires without tarnishing his reputation. If he chooses to retire at the end of the calendar year, as some players do, then it still works for him, but the team will have been handcuffed in free agency. So will the team release him at the end of the season and pay him his $21 million so they can compete for free agents? If I’m Pierce I wait the team out and make them pay me, they don’t really have a choice. There is no way Calgary can keep his salary on the books.

And leave $19M on the table? Tough call.
