Karyabwite Takes Helm in Chestermere
The Calgary Pioneers announced today that team legend Juan Karyabwite has been named as the new manager of the team’s Rookie League affiliate in Chestermere. Karyabwite, who just retired, will join former Calgary slugger Bernardo Perez and Pioneer perennial project Eduard Menosky on the coaching staff.
“We want those new kids to come right from the draft and be greeted by one of the greats. We want them to see what can happen when talent meets hard work and Juan is the guy to do it,” GM Kevin Dickson said.
This could be an exciting Spring for Karyabwite. As he takes over his new position, he also waits to hear whether or not he will get the call from BBA Hall of Fame. It’s his first time on the ballot, but given his 3000 hits and his Zimmer Awards, he has a shot to be a first ballot inductee.
Chestermere has struggled to win games and has missed the playoffs the past 3 seasons. They last won the Championship in 2033. Calgary’s minor league system is now ranked 19th in the league, up from 30th last season. Karyabwite’s main goal will be to develop the teams youngest players.
