Rios Going, Going, Gone
The Pioneers have made it clear that pitcher Mauro Rios will not be with the team next year. An offseason signing, Rios has underperformed and been a general disruption in the clubhouse this year. After 12 miserable starts he was relegated to the bullpen and has pouted ever since.
“It is rare that I bad mouth a player, but Rios has been one gigantic pain in the ass,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “What is more disappointing, is this is a guy I tried to trade for several times when he was with Charm City and I really thought he would pitch well for us. Instead I think he started to complain after about the third game this year about the team not winning. Well if he hadn’t have pitched like crap, maybe we would have been winning!”
“At this point I will trade him for just about whatever I get offered. A low level prospect, an old shoe, a half eaten potato chip. Just make me an offer,” he added.
Rios was 2-6 with a 7.25 ERA in 12 starts. In 33 appearances as a reliever he was much better, going 2-1, with a 3.42 ERA. In his starts he averaged 3.5 runs in support per game, a full run higher than Jefferson Pierce. “Black Lighting” did not complain.
