Calgary on the Market?

The rumors are flying in Calgary after another dismal season. The Pioneers missed the playoffs for the second year in a row and posted their first losing season since 2043. To make matters worse, several other teams in the JL Frontier made positive strides this year leaving the Pioneers in the dust. Could this be the year that owner Charles Radbourn sells the team?

Radbourn is 88 years old and in failing health. He was only able to attend a few games in person this season and sent his GM to the owners meetings the past two seasons. While he descends from baseball royalty, he has no known heir. The bloodline that flowed from Old Hoss Radbourn down through the Pioneers owner appears to be at an end. Radbourn’s office did not respond to repeated inquiries.

“I don’t respond to rumors, particularly about my boss,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “All I know is he still owns the team and signs my paychecks.”

Radbourn, the great-grand nephew of Old Hoss, bought the team in 2005. In those 45 years Calgary has won 2 championships, in 2018 and 2021. It has been a long 29 years since that last one. If the team is sold, what will it mean for the front office and the dugout. Will GM Kevin Dickson still have a job and what about manager Terry Cochran, who in 20 years on the bench hasn’t gotten a Landis or Brewster trophy to show for it. Cochran is the winningest active BBA manager, but at 65 years old a new owner might want to make changes.

It could be a hot winter in Calgary.
