Backhouse Leads Pioneers Offense
Some people wondered whether Adam Backhouse could make the transition from the UMEBA to the BBA after signing a 6 year $77 million contract. Wonder no more, Backhouse more than proved himself, leading the Pioneers in home runs and RBIs. His 45 homers was 2nd in the JL and he led the JL with 128 RBIs.
Backhouse was a 7 time All Star in the UMEBA and averaged 45 home runs per year in his 8 seasons, leading the league 5 times. So he matched his average regarding homers, although his average at .299 was about 30 points lower than in the BBA.
“We knew the kid could hit the long ball and that is why we signed him,” Calgary manager Terry Cochran said. “Now we need to work on him not swinging at as many bad pitches.
Backhouse loves the long ball and looks to hit one at every at bat, which might explain his horrific BB/K ration. This season he struck out 150 times, but only walked 4 times. Yep, you read that right. He walked 4 times. Cochran himself lead the lead 3 times in strikeouts and once whiffed 195 times in a season so maybe he isn’t as concerned.
“I really liked playing in Calgary, the fans are great. I think I’m going to hang around this winter, since we don’t really have winter in Australia,” Backhouse said. “I heard they get some snow up here.”
