Thomas Stars in Second Season
Calgary right fielder Chris Thomas had a breakout second season this year. Thomas his .282, with 37 home runs and 104 RBIs. He led the league in sacrifice flies with 11. The only Pioneer with a better season at the plate was Larry Stinson.
Thomas was Calgary’s first round pick in 2042, although at the bottom of the round with pick #32. He struggled throughout his minor league career, giving Calgary’s front office doubts about his big league future. A September call up in 2047 didn’t help as he only hit .211. Despite his weak numbers, he was given the right field job in 2048 to sink or swim.
“I could see the kid had the talent, he just had to adjust to the game at this level,” manager Terry Cochran said. “He had the raw power, he just needed to bust his cherry and give it 100%.”
Thomas’ 2048 season was solid with an .856 OPS, but he didn’t drive in many runs and his fielding was below average. This year his power numbers improved, he posted a .911 OPS and he wasn’t a liability in right field. The team has toyed with moving him to left field where they think he might fit better, but we will see what happens in the Spring.
