2049-2 Bell Leaving Team

Bell Leaving Team

One of the first changes Calgary fans will see in 2050 is a new face at second base. Who that is, nobody knows, but it won’t be Scott Bell. After 8 seasons as the starter in Calgary, Bell will be moving on to another team. The team never even tried to negotiate an extension with him as the two sides were too far apart on their numbers to contemplate a compromise.

“I would say the gap between us was a canyon,” Calgary GM (as of the writing of this article) Kevin Dickson said. “Scotty was making $7.2 mil this year and he wanted twice that to extend. There was no way we could afford that and frankly, while I like him, he’s not worth it. After he sits out there for awhile, waiting for the phone to ring this winter, I think his demands will come back to reality.”

Bell was never a great glove at 2B, but he made up for it with his bat. A career .282 hitter, he averaged over 40 doubles a season and nearly 20 home runs. Plus the boy can run. He stole 99 bases over the past 2 seasons to go with 94 doubles. At 28, Bell is in his prime and will probably be looking to sign with a contender this off season as he hasn’t had that experience in Calgary.

Manager Terry Cochran didn’t have anything to say when asked about the future of his infield. Reportedly he was overheard at a local watering hole musing on whether the team would try to bring back retired Pioneer infielder and minor league coach Tony Franco to fill the void. Of course that is unlikely as Franco is 49 years old, but Cochran is rumored to have said that Franco would still be younger than some of the team’s minor league prospects.

Supply and demand. Everyone is looking for middle infielders. Bell asking for $14 million seems realistic for a capable 2B putting up 2-3 WAR a year. Somebody will probably give him at least 10 cause they have a huge hole to fill.

If someone wants to give him $14 mil then more power to them. If his glove was a bit better I could understand, but I could see $10 mil as more reasonable. Just hoping to get a comp pick out of him.
