Loud Sucking Sound Heard in Calgary

If you are wondering what that loud sucking sound you heard coming from Calgary was, well it was of course the Pioneers. The team, supposedly a major league team, recently concluded a thoroughly awful and boring season. If you are going to suck this bad at least be interesting. Calgary wasn’t.

Early in the season the team was leading in the wild card race. They ended up not making the playoffs as they didn’t finish among the top four non-division winners. They didn’t finish in the Phoenix spot, also know as 5th, they finished 6th.

The hitting was downright pathetic. The pitching was tolerable, but you have to score to win. Finishing 9th in the JL in runs scored isn’t going to get you into the postseason. How bad is a team’s offense, when they can’t find a player to fill the weak side of a platoon in LF or DH. How can you not find a righty that can hit lefties to DH!

The team is almost to the cap and is filled with underachievers, has beens and wasted potential. Hanging on to 29 year old role players, waiting for them to have a their break out season is just sad. Filling your upper minor leagues with more of these type of guys is even worse. Yep, that 31 year old 40 potential pitcher, just might still have a chance to make it. Really?

Due to the mismanagement of the farm system, the club ranks dead last in the “Minor League System” rankings with 0 points. Well actually tied for last with Edmonton and Jacksonville. Jacksonville won a 100 games and the Atlantic Division this year, so who cares about the farm. Edmonton is under new management. It is surprising the league isn’t asking the Pioneers to look for new management as well.

Many wonder why the Pioneer press office was so quiet this year. Well if this was your team would you want to talk about it? “Bad, old and boring, but hey we sell good burgers at the ballpark, come out and watch us play,” isn’t exactly the headline you want. Remarkably the team still drew over 4 million fans and made a profit. I guess there isn’t much else to do in Calgary.

Calgary has managed to post winning records and sneak into the last wild card spot for several seasons now, by putting together enough role players and Rule 5 guys, to go with a few solid players. Their smoke and mirrors didn’t work this season. Moving forward the team really only has two options. Finally do a real rebuild (like the should have done years ago) and cut loose their roster of aging former and failed prospects. Even cutting those that must only be under contract to mow the GM’s lawn. Or the team needs to fire it’s long time GM Kevin Dickson, the pathetic Asst GM Alfonso Martinez and the winningest manager to never win a title Terry Cochran. The city deserves better and so does the league.
