Whitehead Has Great Season
When your ace is Jefferson Pierce, what are the odds that he doesn’t lead the team in wins and ERA? Well this year it is sophomore Eric Whitehead that takes the crown with 17 wins and a 3.43 ERA. If he hadn’t missed 4 starts with 2 stints in AAA, Whitehead might have had a chance to become only the second pitcher in Pioneer history to win 20 games. Whitehead’s 17 wins tied him with two others for tops in the JL this year.
“Eric just showed everyone why we took him in the first round,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “We knew we had a steal getting him at #30 and now the rest of the league knows it too. Silas says that he is the best hurler he has worked with since we brought Jefferson in.”
Whitehead will remain in the #2 slot for now. Pierce is 32 years old, 10 years older than Whitehead. Some on the team think that Whitehead is the heir apparent when Pierce slows down or may opt out after next season. Others are not so sure. Calgary has a plethora of #3-5 young pitchers in their minor league system looking for a chance to break in. However, none of them appear to be Whitehead’s equal, nor do any look to have ace ability. While the future of the rotation is uncertain, Whitehead’s place in it is not.

Nice start to his career, that 0.30 ERA his last year in AAA also has a wow factor
