Is Cochran the New Schottenheimer?

Another season finished and Calgary manager Terry Cochran once again finishes it without a trophy. Like the infamous NFL coach Terry Schottenheimer, Cochran is great at making the playoffs, but terrible at winning it all.

In 21 years of coaching Schottenheimer won 200 and lost 127. His teams made the playoffs 13 times. His team never won the championship. Several times he came close but never came home with the trophy in the end.

Cochran has managed Calgary for 17 seasons with a 1475-1274 record. He has more games managed and more wins than any other active manager. His teams have made the playoffs 10 times. This is tops among active managers and third best all time. He has no championships. Twice the Pioneers have made it to the championship under his leadership, but both times they lost.

“Yeah it is starting to get old,” Cochran said when reminded of some of these stats. “I won it twice as a player and I had tried my best to bring another trophy home from this dugout. I just really can’t explain the last 2 years.”

Once again there is speculation that this might be the year Cochran and the team part ways. If the team decides to blow it up and go in for a full rebuild will the 62 year old stick around or will the team hand the helm to a younger skipper?
