St. Paul and Duluth Win Titles

The Pioneers celebrated winning the Johnson League crown, despite losing the Landis in 7 games to Omaha. However, they aren’t the only ones partying as the team’s AAA and AA squads also won titles this year and the Rookie league team made it to the finals.

The St. Paul Riverhawks defeated the Victoria Canucks (Vancouver) 3-0 to win the AAA Championship. The Riverhawks 93-51 record was the best in the league this season. 1B Tony Horton led the team with 34 HR and 113 RBI. Carlos Granados was the team’s top hurler going 12-6, 3.24 ERA.

The team had 2 players with Platinum Stick Awards, C Juan Noriega and RF Ralph Callahan. Joe Quinn CF was awarded a Clayton Chancey Glove Award. St. Paul manager Nicholas Brody was chosen as the manager of the year, the 3rd time he has won it.

The Duluth Dragons beat the Santa Cruz Spartans (Yellow Springs) 3-0 to win the AA Championship. The Dragons 91-49 record was the best in the league this year. SS Daryl Tibbett led the league in hitting with a .342 BA. He was selected as the Platinum Stick recipient at SS. Kendrick Pearson was the top hurler pitching out of the bullpen, going 10-3, 2.80 ERA with 152 K’s in 115 IP.

Manager Estaban Ortiz was named the league’s top manager. It looks like coaches are bucking for a promotion in the system. 3B Juan Domingo won a Brad Aramathal Glove Award.

Chestermere, Calgary’s Rookie League team, lost in the Championship 4-2 to the Bartlett Jazz (New Orleans affiliate). The Lunkers went 51-17 during the season, which was tied for the top record, winning their division by 11 games. SP Manny Garcia led the team going 8-0, 1.90 and winning the Leonard Puckett Pitcher of the Year Award. Teammate Jim Hayes finished 3rd in the voting.

2B Allen Foster was awarded the Platinum Stick Award and Pat Carter Glove Award. RF Jesus Ortiz also won a Platinum Stick and C Ruben Cantu was awarded a Pat Carter. The Lunkers manager Carl Long was honored as the Manager of the Year for the HL.

So 4 teams in the system made it to the championship series, including Calgary. I’d call that a decent year.
Kevin
