2046-5 Thank You NO and CHA

Thank You NO and CHA

The fans in Calgary would like to send a big thank you to the management of the New Orleans Crawdads and the Charlotte Cougars. Both teams gave up on Jeffrey Russell this year and Russell proved invaluable to Calgary down the stretch after the picked him up on waivers.

“Russell was a guy that I shortlisted several years ago. I think I even talked to Charlotte at one point about him, but I probably talked to them about half the pitchers on their team at one point or another,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “So you can imagine how happy we were to see him on the waiver wire right when we were struggling with that spot in our rotation.”

Russell was claimed by New Orleans on April 15th when the Cougars put him on waivers. The Crawdads in return waived him and Calgary snatched him on June 17th. Russell only pitched 9.2 innings for New Orleans and he was frankly dismal in Charlotte over the 3 previous seasons. Both teams had used him primarily as a reliever, while Russell considered himself a starter and was getting discouraged as to whether or not he would ever get a real shot in a big league rotation.

After coming to the Pioneers, Russell made 17 starts posting a 6-4 record with a 2.88 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. More importantly than his record, 13 of his 17 starts were quality starts, keeping the team in the game and not burning through the bullpen. He also started 3 games in the playoffs against Charlotte and Las Vegas going 2-1, 2.70 ERA. He didn’t start any games against Charm City as the team went with more lefties in that series.

“I tell you, I wasn’t all that excited when I got moved around this season, Russell said. “I played 3 years in Charlotte, I get waived and NOW they get good? Then I figured with New Orleans I hooked on with one of the premiers franchises in league history. Then when I heard I was going to Calgary and looked at their record, too be honest, I wasn’t all that excited. Then Terry called me and told me there was a spot in the rotation if I wanted it and now we are going for the trophy. Funny how things work out.”

Sure, rub it in. Not that we needed the pitching help but still.....

He still wouldn’t have made your rotation even pitching like he has.
