Taub Signing Pays Off
The Calgary Pioneers made one significant free agent signing before this season, starting pitcher Stephen Taub. Hawaii had used Taub primarily in the bullpen during the previous 3 seasons, but Calgary thought he could still start in the BBA and gave him a chance. It has payed off for the team as Taub is 7-5, 4.02 ERA and is tied for 3rd in the JL with 12 quality starts out of 17.
“We are really happy with how Steve has pitched this year,” said Calgary manager Terry Cochran. “He was wasting away in their bullpen, glad our GM took a chance on him.”
Taub was a starter for Hawaii his first 7 seasons, before moving to the bullpen. He was selected to 4 straight All Star games from 2036-39 as a starter. Taub was equally effective as a reliever and given the Tropics rotation the team had the luxury of moving him to the bullpen.
Making this signing even better was the price. Calgary is paying Taub $8 million this season, but only $3.5 million the next 2 seasons. That is a pretty good price for a starter of Taub’s caliber.
