Leonard Inducted Into Calgary HOF

The Pioneers announced that first baseman Dan Leonard will be joining Cristobal Hernandez in Calgary’s Hall of Fame this year. Leonard played 18 years in the BBA, all but 1 with Calgary. Leonard played on Calgary’s 2021 Landis winning team and won the MVP trophy in all 3 rounds that year.

“I am really happy to see Dan added to our Hall,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “Personally I think he should be in the BBA HOF, but so should Terry and Tony.”

Leonard ranks among the team’s all time career leaders in several hitting categories. He is the all time leader with 1975 singles and 130 triples. He’s 6th with .312 AVG, 4th with 2152 games, 5th with 8372 at bats, 6th with 1249 runs, 5th with 2609 hits, 6th with 399 doubles and 6th with 387 SB. While he played over 1500 games at 1B, he also played 673 games in the outfield, 123 at 2B and 84 at 3B.

“It is a real honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Calgary. This is where I played most of my career and where I hope to be back again someday as a coach,” Leonard said. “When I look at the other players in this hall, it reminds me of our dugout, since so many of us played together on some of those great teams.”

Leonard was a big IFA signing for the Halifax Hawks (now Nashville) and was traded to Calgary for Hall of Fame shortstop Jonathan Archer. Halifax’s GM at the time was Chris Robillar, now the GM of Calgary’s rival Edmonton Jackrabbits. Leonard broke in with Calgary in 2020 at the tender age of 18. He moved into the starting lineup the next season and would remain there for the next 14 seasons.

Leonard’s best season was 2027 when he hit .347 and led the league with 18 triples. That is still the single season record in Calgary. For his BBA career he hit .311, with 2817 hits, 1340 runs scored and 142 triples. He was selected to 4 all star teams and won the Zimmer Award twice. Leonard retired after the 2037 season.

In 2040 Leonard came back to the organization when he was hired as the hitting coach in AA Duluth. A role he continues in while waiting for his chance to come back to Calgary.
