Calgary Inducts Hernandez Into HOF

The Calgary Pioneers announced that pitcher Cristobal Hernandez is being inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. Hernandez will be only the fourth pitcher to be inducted into Calgary’s hall.

“I am really pleased that we have the opportunity to honor Cristobal. He maybe the greatest pitcher to ever pitch for us, although we have a guy now that might challenge that,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “He has been part of our team for over 20 years now and I am so glad he is still with us as a coach.”

Hernandez is Calgary’s all time leader in wins with 154. He also is the team leader with 376 starts, 2459 innings pitched and 2155 strikeouts. Unfortunately he also lead the team in home runs given up with 316. Hernandez spent 13 seasons as a player in Calgary and only pitched 12 BBA games in a different uniform.

“This is really a great honor and it is a privilege to be enshrined with so many of my former teammates,” Hernandez said. “Growing up on the streets of Santo Domingo I didn’t even know where Calgary was when that scout approached me, but I knew it was my ticket to a better life. I never imagined all this.”

In 2022 the team signed Hernandez to a minor league deal out of the Dominican Republic as a 16 year old. Like many of the team’s starts he was an IFA. He made his big league debut in 2029 and went on to post a 16-7, 3.13 record as a rookie. He won 10 or more games in 11 of his seasons with Calgary. From 2031-2036 he was one of the top pitchers in the BBA winning 17 games twice and never having an ERA over 3.78. His WHIP during these years ranged from 1.02-1.17. Consistency is what you got with Cristobal.

For his career in Calgary Hernandez was 154-116, 3.97 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 7.9K’s per 9. He never won a Nebraska, but finished 2nd in the voting one year and 3rd in another. He was selected to 4 All Star teams and won the Zimmer Award once. In his first 10 seasons he never started fewer than 31 games until 2039 when he tore his UCL missing the remainder of that season. He as never the same after that.

Hernandez retired after the 2042 season and Calgary hired him in 2044 to be the pitching coach in Quebec, the team’s A ball team. At 39 he is the youngest coach in the system.
