Calgary’s 2046 Rotation, Anyone's Guess

So Calgary’s pitching this year can be summed up with one word and that word would be awful. The starters 4.84 ERA ranked 9th and the bullpen was worse placing 11th in the JL with a 4.72 ERA. The bright spot for the team was finishing 5th best in walks, but the team was a dismal 12th in strikeouts and 13th in opponents batting average. Pure and simple the pitchers gave up too many hits last year.

Despite the numbers the team has the nucleus of a good bullpen, when healthy. The team lost closer Joel Ottoboni for most of the year and Fernando Rangel hasn’t had a season without injury. With most of the other hurlers in the pen being lefties, the team needs these two to stay healthy. While the team wouldn’t be opposed to adding another arm in the pen, the focus right now is on the rotation.

Jefferson Pierce and then what, is probably what the team should call it’s rotation. The trade of Edwin Gilliam leaves a huge hole and nobody the team got back in the deal is likely to fill it. Frank Boland is a solid #3 or #4 starter and Quintiliano Rodeia is more of a #4 or #5. So ideally the team needs a #2 and #3 starting pitchers and most of the rest of the bunch are back end. These three will have spots in the rotation, let’s look at who the team has for the other 2 spots.

Juan Garcia - The team put him in the rotation at the end of the season and is paying him starting pitcher dollars. While he has the raw talent he has never shown it when in a rotation. In 7 starts with Calgary he had a 6,39 ERA. Think about it, even Des Moines stopped using him as a starter

Jose Arellano - This guy was brought in as a starter from Omaha, but has had back to back seasons with an ERA over 5.00 in Calgary. On top of that his WHIP was 1.61 this year after being 1.52 last year. Like Garcia he has the talent, but underperforms when it is game time.

Rodrigo Gallegos - In another trade that Edmonton got the better of us in, Gallegos finally came home to Calgary this year. And then he laid a giant turd. In 15 starts his ERA was over 7.00 and the team moved him out of the rotation after he went 1-8. Unfortunately he wasn’t any better in the bullpen. He has been a solid back end starter for the Jackrabbits and the team was hoping for something similar here.

Jose Vega - The most promising pitcher at AAA, Vega even got a September call up to show his stuff. Working out of the pen he posted a promising .97 WHIP in 24 innings then promptly blew out his elbow at the end of the month. Vega will miss most if not all of next season with his injury.

Juma Leghzaoui - The main guy in the Gilliam trade, Leghzaoui has nothing more to prove at AAA. He keeps the hits and walks down, 1.13 WHIP and strikes out almost a batter an inning. It doesn’t look like he will ever be a Gilliam, but he has the makings of a solid starter. Of all the players mentioned, he is the most likely to earn a spot in Calgary’s rotation next year.

Greg Brown - Does the proverbial prospect have what it takes to finally make it to the BBA. A first rounder in 2041, he is on his fourth organization. While boasting 4 solid pitches he is still giving up too many hits for a pitcher with his talent. His stamina isn’t the best either making him a longshot to make the rotation of a playoff contending team.

Manuel Gonzalez - How about a curveball or in Gonzalez’ case a screwball, his curve is actually awful. He hasn’t pitched in the BBA since 2042, but has put up solid numbers in AAA all of the three past years. He is a low WHIP kind of pitcher, the kind that Calgary likes and is itching to get another shot at the big leagues. While better in the bullpen this year he is an interesting player to watch as Calgary plans it’s next step.

What is clear from this is that Calgary has a bunch of #5 starters and a few #4’s. This is the biggest need the team has going into free agency and expect Calgary to throw money at whoever is the best starter out there. The team could also look to make a deal for an older starter with gas still left in the tank, but probably doesn’t have the goods to trade for a starter in their prime.
