Tim Battle has been selected as the JL Player of the Week for the second time this season. On 9/11 he was chosen after hitting .640 for the week with 4 home runs and 9 runs batted in. In his sophomore season with the Pioneers, Battle has already surpassed the production he had during his stellar rookie year.

“I am just glad I get to play everyday this year after having to platoon last year,” Battle said. “It really says something about the coach when he replaces his own kid with me in the lineup.”

Battle is referring to Calgary manager Terry Cochran agreeing with management to let his son Tommy Cochran walk in free agency during the offseason. Cochran, Terry that is, was confidant that Battle was ready to handle the first base job full time. Meanwhile Tommy has shined in El Paso hitting 44 home runs so far and is finally even hitting right handed pitching.

Battle hit .309, .932 OPS, 25 HR and 85 RBIs last season. So far this year he is hitting ,325, .940 OPS, 33 HR and 113 RBIs. Never a highly sought after prospect, he has proven to be a solid middle of the order hitter.

Among JL first baseman this season Battle is 2nd in AVG, 2nd in OBA, 3rd in OPS and 4th in RBIs. Anyone that follows the JL knows how loaded it is at this position. Battle, however, is more concerned with his team’s standing than his own.
