Pioneers Announce Final Cuts
The last cuts are always the toughest and this year is no exception. The team started off by announcing that two veterans have been put on waivers, C Hector Serrano and P Chris Thomas. Serrano has been with the team for 9 seasons, but lost his starting job to Howard Burton in 2043. Thomas has been a swingman for the team over the past 2 seasons. Thomas was out of options and Serrano refused assignment to the minors.
“We offered Hector the chance to stay with us and spend some time with St. Paul while we sort out our catching situation. We wanted to get a longer look at our Rule 5 guy, but Hector asked us to waive him and see if he got a BBA shot elsewhere,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “If he clears waivers I sure hope he reconsiders, we really like Hector, but it just came down to numbers and we wanted to look at the younger guys.”
A surprise cut was Hadji Ufanisi getting sent down again to AAA. The team had discussed not only giving him a role on the team, but in the starting lineup. I guess we know how that discussion turned out. Reliever Jose Gonzalez was cut despite pitching well this Spring and in a limited call up last season. For Gonzalez it came down to the team having a surplus of left handers already in the bullpen. Expect him to be the first pitcher called up if there is an injury in the bullpen.
The team also returned Rule 5 pick Torvald Leers to Louisville. Leeds hit 2 home runs in his first game with Calgary, but that was the highlight of his camp. Limited to playing DH, there just wasn’t a spot for him on the roster. The other cut was SS Jose Carlos Coronado, missing out on a chance to make the team as a utility player.

These guys like Chris Thomas look like such good players because of the ratings change.... But they also appear to be a dime a dozen now.
