Calgary First Round of Cuts

Sometimes it doesn’t matter how good you play in camp, you still don’t make the team. This is the week that talent isn’t the only factor, as options and slots play a sometimes bigger role. Based on the cuts made by the Calgary Pioneers today, this appears to be the case, as several players who had great training camps were handed tickets to St. Paul.

Greg Brown and Jose Vega were longshots to make the team, particularly after the acquisition of Rodrigo Gallegos. Brown started 5 games this Spring and was 0-3, but his ERA was only 2.84. He needs to work a little more on his control, but showed he deserves a shot at the BBA. Vega had an evern better Spring going 2-1, 2.37 ERA and .95 WHIP. Vega has set himself up to get a call up to Calgary at some point this year.

A trio of pitchers that spent all or part of last season in Calgary got their tickets punched as well. The biggest name of the group was Carlos Granados, who has spent the past 5 seasons with Calgary, but struggled last year. A dismal camp didn’t help his case. Arev Yaghian finally got his shot last year after spending most of 2043 on IR. In 10 appearances last season he posted a 3.29 ERA and had a solid performance in camp. However it came down to numbers and options and he got sent down. Arturo Rivera spent all of last season at St. Paul after spending time with the big league club the two previous seasons. At 30 this might have been his last real shot at sticking in the BBA.

Enrique Marquez only pitched 6 games in AAA last year after spending most of the season in AA. The team wanted him to get the big league experience so he got the invite to camp. As expected he was overmatched, but now he can spend this season in St. Paul with a better understanding of what awaits him in the BBA.

The last cut was a bit of a surprise, because the clock is running on catcher Augusto Vargas. The team has 30 days to bring him up to Calgary or he becomes a free agent. Vargas was signed to platoon against left handed pitching and he hit .435 in the Spring with a 1.109 OPS. He hit better than expected and fulfilled the role he was signed to fill. While the team fully intends to bring him back up they wanted to get a better look at Rule 5 draftee Hector Melendez so Vargas will go down for a few weeks.

Calgary needs to make 6 more cuts. They will have to cut at least a catcher, an infielder, an outfielder, two pitchers and another player. Those cuts will probably find some players being put on waivers.
