Cano Gets Promoted to Calgary

The Pioneers named Hector Cano as the team’s new hitting coach today. Cano is replacing Don Goodwin who retired at the end of the season. Cano has been the manager at AA Duluth for the past 4 seasons. He was the hitting coach there the 4 seasons before taking over the helm.

“It was a tough choice given how many talented coaches we have in the system, but we think Hector is the right guy to help out with this rebuild,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “He has worked with many of these guys at Duluth over the past couple of years.

Cano played with the Pioneers from 2014-2032 and is a BBA Hall of Famer. Arguably, the best player in Calgary history, he is also a member of Calgary’s Hall of Fame and is one of two players to have their numbers retired by the team. He ranks fourth all time in the BBA with 643 HRs. Cano played on both of Calgary’s Landis winning teams as did manager Terry Cochran and pitching coach Silas Thompson.

“I am really happy to finally get my shot and it will be great being with Terry and Silas in the dugout again. Maybe we can turn these guys into our third Landis winner,” Cano said.

Cano began his coaching career as the manager of SA ball Havana in 2033. After 3 seasons there he got promoted to Duluth where his was the hitting coach for 4 years and the manager the past 4 seasons. His teams have made the playoffs 9 out of 11 seasons. In 2041 he was awarded the Manager of the Year Award.

Goodwin had been in coach in the system since 2027 and has been the hitting coach in Calgary since 2032. He played with the team from 2006-2017 and led the league in RBIs with 142 in 2009. While never the slugger that Cochran and Cano were he was the best home run hitter for the team when he played.

Most younger fans forget that Goodwin broke in before the DH rule was implemented and was such an effective run producer that he kept one of the team’s top prospects stuck in AAA for an extra season or two. That prospect of course was the great Terry Cochran who didn’t break in until 2008, Goodwin’s 3rd season and the first year of the DH. The delay may have cost Cochran his spot in the Hall of Fame by denying him his shot at 3000 hits.

Estaban Ortiz, longtime Calgary pitcher, was promoted to replace Cano as the manager in Duluth. He had been the pitching coach at Quebec.

Interesting note - Goodwin’s retirement hit the Calgary GM particularly hard. Goodwin was involved in the first trade that Dickson made for Calgary when he took over as GM. The deal sent CF Roland Carroll to Madison, where he helped them win the Landis. Goodwin and several other prospects came back to Calgary in the deal.
