Boland and Rangel Done for the Season
One pitcher down is bad enough, but the Pioneers have lost 2 of their hurlers before the season even started. Starter Frank Boland and reliever Fernando Rangel are done for the year after suffering back to back serious injuries. Calgary will now have to fill a spot in the rotation and replace their main setup man.
Boland tore a ligament in his elbow on March 16th against the Brooklyn Robins. The doctors think he will be ready to go by training camp next year, but his season is over. The lefty was slotted to be the teams #3 starter this year after an impressive rookie campaign. He was 14-4, 3.74 ERA last season.
“Losing Frank is a real blow,” said new pitching coach Silas Thompson. “We were a little thin and just trying to figure out who are 5th starter will be and this happens.”
Making matters worse, Fernando Rangel tore his UCL the next day against Mexico City. Rangel was expected to be the primary setup man in the bullpen this year after 2 solid seasons in Calgary’s pen. Rangel’s injury will require a year or more to recover from so he may miss part of next season along with the rest of this one.
Boland was having a rough Spring going 0-2, 5.87 ERA in 3 appearances. Rangel on the other hand was performing very well. He was 1-0, 1.29 ERA in 4 games. Losing two young pitchers that were integral to the team’s hopes this year is a serious blow to Calgary’s comeback ambitions.

Tough luck from the outset. I'm sure you'll find a way, Kevin. You always do.
