Pennybags Returns
Former fan favorite Milburn Pennybags has been hired by Calgary to coach at Rookie League Chestermere. Pennybags, who spent his entire 9 season career in Calgary, will be the team’s new pitching coach.
While never a star, Pennybags was always a local favorite and one of the guys that kept the clubhouse a fun place to be. His never ending Monopoly games became legend. Born in Atlantic City he said he had Monopoly in his blood.
“You know there are some guys that just make an impression and Milburn was always one of those guys,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “And I mean a good impression, but don’t tell him I said that.”
Pennybags spent time as both a starter and a reliever with the Pioneers. His career numbers are 42-33-4, 4.38 ERA. His best season was 2028 when he was 12-6, 3.41 ERA. He left Calgary after the 2033 season and retired in 2035. He holds the distinction as being the only Calgary coaches to never win any awards at any level of baseball.
“The great thing about coaching in Chestermere is that it is so close to Calgary I will still be able to catch many of the games there,” Pennybags said. There is no word on whether he is still organizing Monopoly games.
