Karyabwite Hits 3 Homers!
Juan Karyabwite did something Tuesday April 8th, that only a handful of Pioneers have ever done before, he hit 3 home runs in a game. He started it off by hitting 2 homers, in the first inning. That’s right, 2 homers in the opening frame to start the team on its way to a 22-6 destruction of the rival Edmonton Jackrabbits. The Pioneers left Edmonton hopping mad.
Karyabwite led off the game with a homer to right field off Edmonton starter Jubal Troop. Rookie Scott Bell came up next and hit another homer off Troop. After 6 runs on 5 hits and no outs, Edmonton went to it’s pen and brought in Luis Ortega who threw 2 pitches to Jose Rios and got him to hit into a double play. Ortega tore his flexor tendon on the pitch and is now out for the year and so is the $10 million that Edmonton is paying him. Jorge Huerta came in as the Jackrabbits 3rd pitcher of the inning, walked a batter and then gave up another homer to Karyabwite, this one a 3 run drive. At the end of the 1st Calgary was up 8-0.
The homers kept flying when Francisco Medina and Martin Marin each hit one in the 3rd, The Chairman hit one in the 4th and Karyabwite came back with his 3rd in the 7th. The hometown crowd greatly enjoyed the 7 homers hit by the Pioneers during their Derby with Edmonton. This was the 8th time a Pioneer has hit 3 homers in a game, the last to do so was Medina in 2039.
Karyabwite was voted the JL Player of the week after going .414 for the week, with 5 HR, 10 runs and 13 RBIs.
