Trail Droppings 2042-4 Calgary Catcher Competition

Calgary Catcher Competition

The weak spot in the Pioneer offense has been the catching position. It looked like there was a chance to grab one of the Crawdads catchers but that deal fell through. Unless there is a big free agent surprise, these are the guys that are competing for the job in Calgary.

Hector Serrano has played better than his potential averaging over .250, 25 doubles and 50 rbi batting at the end of the order. He is a switch hitter, a factor in his favot. He has put up a 3+ ZR the past 2 seasons as well, but the team would like to upgrade the position. Serrano will make the team for his 7th season, the only question is will he hold his starting job or be the backup.

Howard Burton has been a frustration to GM Kevin Dickson. An 8th round pick in the loaded 2038 draft, Burton’s bat developed quickly but he is a moron behind the plate. A lefty that can hit for average, doubles and doesn’t strike out a ridiculous amount should be the guy getting penciled into the lineup every day against right handed pitching. But after 330 games behind the plate he still hasn’t learned how to play the position. He will get a shot in Spring Training but if he doesn’t figure it out he will go back to AAA.

Joaquin Sandoval is the reverse of Burton. He can play the position, but he has not proved he has the bat yet. Sandoval has never played above A ball but he has a shot at the backup position based on his glove and his ability to throw out runners.

Andy O'Quinn has played his last 3 seasons at AAA. He can hit better than Sandoval and has a better glove than Burton. He might be the compromise candidate. At 26 he is running out of chances to make it to the bigs, maybe this will be his year.

Well the article did say "unless there is a big free agent surprise". Figured someone would offer him a multiyear deal, but thought since I had the cap space I'd throw out a 1 year deal. Got lucky.
