Ottoboni Wins Egan
In one of the closest contests in recent years, Calary’s Joel Ottoboni has won the JL Jason Egan Reliever Award defeating Shawn Huber of Las Vegas. Ottoboni finished with 225 points to Huber’s 207. Huber had 18 1st place votes to Ottoboni’s 7, but Ottoboni had 22 2nd and 3rd place votes to Huber’s 6. Ottoboni was named on 33 ballots while Huber only got votes on 27.
“I am thrilled to be recognized by the league. I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out,” Ottoboni said. He avoided answering questions about the controversy that exploded recently.
After voting was underway, a behind the scenes effort was discovered promoting Huber for the prize. While traditionally won by a closer with a high save total some argued that Huber, in his role as a stopper, was more deserving. When Long Beach GM lobbied (with graphs and everything) for Huber to win the Nebraska Award it is reported that some heated messages were sent through the ether.
“I’m not going to get into it,” Pioneer GM Kevin Dickson said. “Vegas runs their bullpen differentlya dn that’s their choice. No matter how you look at it though, Joel deserved to win the award. He only blew 2 saves out of 48 opportunities. Thats what he gets paid for. If I put him out there for 150 innings, he would have had better numbers than Huber, but thats not the way we run our pen.”
Ottoboni was 5-2, 46 saves, 1.98 ERA and .90 WHIP. He walked a mere 5 batters in 63.2 innings. His 13.4 K/BB ratio was the best in the league. He was even better in the playoffs saving 5 games and posting a .90 ERA and .40 WHIP. He struck out 16 batters in 10 innings and walked 1.
Huber was 10-6, 8 saves, 2.66 ERA and .99 WHIP. His K/BB was 7.1, about half what Ottoboni’s was.
