Trail Droppings 2041-10 Hernandez Released

Hernandez Released

Cristobal has pitched his last game for the Calgary Pioneers. The team released probably the best starting pitcher in it’s history in a cost cutting move. Hernandez was due $18.5 million next season and his release frees up the cap space that the team needs.

“This is not something we want to do, but rather something we have to do,” Pioneer GM Kevin Dickson said. “When Cristobal signed this deal he knew that it was a possibility that this could happen. That is why the final year was a player option instead of a team option. The team will pay him the remainder of the deal.”

Hernandez pitched 13 years with Calgary and is the team’s all time leader with 154 wins and the leader with 2155 strikeouts. He also holds the team mark for starts and innings pitched. He never won a Nebraska but finished 2nd in 2036 and 3rd in 2032. Selected to 4 all star teams he also won a Zimmer Award in 2035.

He won 10 or more games the first 10 seasons of his career, twice winning 17. Known as a fireballer with good control that kept the ball in the park, his career was sidetracked when he tore his UCL in 2039 after pitching only 2 games. He came back and won 10 games in 2040, but he wasn’t the pitcher he was and spent most of 2041 in the bullpen before having surgery on his shoulder and missing another 2 months.

“I had hoped to play my whole career in Calgary and wanted to bring home a Landis,” Hernandez said. “But I know it’s a business and I understand. I will be back in the BBA next season and hope to be back as a starter.”

Given the pitching situation in the BBA, Hernandez will probably sign a new contract soon. He will also get his chance to regain his place in a rotation especially if he signs with a team that has a pitcher friendly park.

“He will always be part of the Pioneer family and we were open to signing him to a lower contract, but he wanted to try the market,” Dickson said. “I’m sure however that we will see him again working with this organization, if not as a player but in another capacity.”

Out of respect to Hernandez the team put him on their playoff roster in the hopes that he could be part of a Landis winning team. He did pitch 1 inning in the post season.

Plus I had the money to afford to eat the contract. I bet he still signs for $10 mil + this year.
