It gets cold in Calgary, but thats okay when you have money to burn. The team reported a record $56 million profit this year, adding to billionaire Charles Radbourn’s fortune. The Pioneers led the league with $165 million in revenue, nearly $10 million more than any other team.

“Sure it’s nice to make some money, this is a business after all,” Radbourn said. “But what is really important is we came within a couple of runs of going to the Landis again and we set an attendance record. It helps when you have a mastermind like Kevin Dickson running the team.”

Dickson, who has been the team’s GM since 2004 has made $484 million for the team during his tenure. In 2040 the team lost $8.6 million, mainly due to overspending on international free agents. Dickson turned that around to the $56 million profit shown in 2041. Has any other owner had a more than $64 million turnaround in 1 year?

While leading the league in revenue, the team was #19 in expenses. The Pioneers were #2 in gate revenue with $35.9 million trailing only Louisville. The team was #3 in media revenue and #5 in sales of merchandise. The team also added another $14,7 million in playoff cash.

“Hey I have one of the best owners in the league to deal with,” Dickson said. “He lets me spend the money when I need to and he always wants what is best for the team. I just wish we could bring him another Landis this year, I thought we had a real shot.”

That’s quite the turnaround. Showing once again finances are the easiest hard thing in the game.

Finances are hard to get righted, but once they are in shape it's mostly about not finding too many bright and shiney things to blow it all on.

I think building the new stadium right around when I was getting competitive was the key. Then just don't screw it up.
