Karyabwite Breaks 2000

The Pioneers Juan Karyabwite became the latest BBA player to register 2000 hits. The 29 year old left fielder is one of the youngest players to ever reach the mark. Karyabwite is in his 10th season, all with Calgary.

“I am lucky to play for such a good team,” he said. “I hope I can play here my whole career.”

Karyabwite at only 29, has a very good chance to reach the coveted 3000 hits mark before he is done. Of the BBA players that have hit 3000, only 2 have done it at 29 or younger. Juan Escobar, who ended his career with 3412 hits also crossed the 2000 threshold at 29. The only member of the 3000 hit club to best Karyabwite was the great Bopper Kengos, all time hits leader with 3900, who broke 2000 only 1 year younger at 28.

A third player hit his 2000th at 29 and while he hasn’t hit 3000 yet, he should next season. That would of course be Steve Dempsey who had settle in at Portland. He currently has 2848.

Karyabwite is on pace for 179 hits this year, which would be the lowest total of his career. A .312 lifetime hitter, he is also closing in on 1000 RBIs and has already surpassed 1000 runs. His also has 637 career stolen bases

“Some people were surprised when we signed him to that big deal,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “But he is the heart of the team, solid year in, year out. An off year for him is better than most players ever get.”

In 2039 the team signed him to a 5 year $86 million contract, the most the team has ever paid a position player. He still has 3 years remaining on the deal.
